“SWING SPEED” OF 17,150 MPH

“Swing Speed” of 17,150 mph!

BEYOND THE COURSE

Swing speed — something we golfers are always trying to increase. But even if you’re swinging 150 mph, it’s nothing compared to how fast the International Space Station is traveling as you read these words. The five seconds it took you to read the last sentence, the Space Station sped 25 miles.

If you happened to watch the Indy 500 race yesterday, you saw live the insides of the Space Station.

The International Space Station travels in orbit around Earth at a speed of about 17,150 miles per hour (that’s about 5 miles per second!). This means that the Space Station orbits Earth (and sees a sunrise) once every 92 minutes.

This remarkable feat of human engineering is a step beyond Iron Byron. Billions of steps to be more accurate. The International Space Stations is a flying machine 230 miles above the earth that measures 357 ft. (109 m), by 239 ft. (73 m), weighs nearly one million lbs. (420,000 kg) and has logged more than 80,000 orbits of the Earth since it began carrying crews in 2000.
