GOOD SHOTS COME FROM GOOD BALANCE — Try This

GOOD SHOTS COME FROM GOOD BALANCE — Try This

By Ken Venturi

I would say 99 percent of the weekend players have a problem with balance. This stems from either trying to hit the ball too hard, or from having a poor address position.

Either way, it’s a serious problem because it is impossible to develop a consistent, repetitive golf swing if you are forever out of balance.

Here’s a good drill to help develop better balance. Get two boards, an inch or so thick and the width of your shoes. Stand on them, taking your normal address position, with ball placed on a tee. Now, with a 5-iron, try to hit the ball without falling off the boards.

This will be difficult for you at first, but the more you practice, the easier it will be to stay in balance — and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how quickly you begin making better contact both on and off the boards.

TOES OUT FOR A BETTER TURN

Many players, particularly when they get older and less limber, have a tough time making a proper turn, and as a result, they lose distance. One solution is to turn or toe-out your feet a little more, with the left foot toed-out slightly more than the right.

Too often people confuse the term “square stance” with turning their toes in so their feet are at right angles to the target line. This toed-in stance restricts body movement.

So, remember: Toes in restricts your turn, whereas toes out gives you the freedom to turn — and to turn on the power.
