Waterville Valley Golf Course Sold

Waterville Valley, NH – Waterville Company, Inc., master developer of Waterville Valley Resort in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, announced today that it has closed the sale of its historic golf course to Craig Larson, Boulder Path, Inc. of Waterville Valley.

Waterville Valley Golf Course is one of the oldest in New Hampshire and is renowned for its scenic beauty. Its location on the resort’s valley floor offers panoramic views of the surrounding 4,000-foot peaks of the White Mountain National Forest. Generations of golfers have played the course for 117 years.  It first opened in 1898 after a group of vacationing guests hand-picked rocks from a pasture to create the first holes. Back then, greens fees were just a dollar and the grass was trimmed by a grazing horse.

Over the years, the old course developed some quirks, including two holes that required shooting over a state highway which was built after the golf course was in place. While always friendly to young golfers and seniors, more advanced golfers wanted something a bit more challenging and interesting.

In 2005, the Waterville Company undertook a major renovation of the course. The new layout did not cross any roads but retained the character and tradition of the historic course and created six spectacular new and redesigned holes. The par 31 layout with three par-4 holes now provides a challenging and fun golf experience for players of all abilities.

Larson has a strong family connection to Waterville Valley and a real appreciation for the historic course. He doesn’t plan on making any big changes.  “I look forward to welcoming Waterville Valley Golf Club members and guests back to the course in 2015 and getting to know them this summer.”

“You’ll see me in the clubhouse and may even see me pushing a lawn mower!” Larson says.

Bill Cantlin, President of the Waterville Company says, “I am very comfortable turning over the golf course to Craig Larson. He is a hands-on type of person and he and the golf course will be a strong asset to the entire resort.”

The Waterville Valley Golf Course is open to the public from mid-May through the middle of October. Memberships are available. Tee time reservations are suggested by calling the Pro Shop at 603-236-4805.
